 2017 Preview 


       American Christian completed the 2016 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region four, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. American Christian's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Pike County by a score of 27-22.

       The Patriots had some tough luck last season as four of their six losses were by less than eight points. The Patriots hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 10-2 record in 2015.

       Since 2010, American Christian has gone a combined 53-29. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, American Christian has gone a combined 206-99. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 3A and 37th in the AHSAA.

       The Patriots are led by head coach Chris Smelley who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 20-13 over the past three seasons at American Christian. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smelley.

       Coach Smelley's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 20-13 (60.6%).

       The American Christian Patriots will play in Class 3A region four during the 2017 season.

       The Patriots will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region four this season.

       The Patriots open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Northside on Friday, August 25 at Freedom Field. Last year the Northside Rams finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 4A region four. The Rams ended last season on a positive note with a win over Holy Spirit by a score of 41-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       American Christian and Northside have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 9-5-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2016 with Northside winning by a score of 21-14.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
